Troubled times can be anything, whether it involves a storm or a personal struggle. It can be hard to stay hopeful when these events happen because it almost seems like the misery never ends!
Fortunately, you are not alone. Here are some gentle reminders to stay hopeful during troubled times.
1. Pray to God.
Suffering and pain are temporary. Like Jonah trapped inside a giant fish—when darkness consumes us, we need to turn to God for help. His strength and wisdom are the only answers to what is best for us.
2. Seek companionship.
I found refuge with my neighbors during Hurricane Katrina as we waited for rescue. Despite the troubles that have plagued the neighborhood, we managed to find joy even during troubling times.
If you are in a similar situation, sometimes it helps to venture out and talk to someone. Whether it involves phoning your mom or talking to a neighbor, you’ll find that companionship can be incredibly healing.
3. Read His Word.
The Bible is a manual to life and a great map of reference. When we feel lost or need to seek answers, God has provided us with a key to these questions. Some helpful verses include:
- “The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.”—Psalm 9:9-10
- “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” —Romans 8:18
- “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”—Joshua 1:9
Personal struggles can affect one’s hope. Fortunately, these troubles are not permanent. After all, God is there with you.
