Bible Verses to Read During a Storm

Storms are terrifying events that inspire fear and doubt. In the bible, numerous events and verses speak of storms and the like.

If you are going through a storm right now (a personal one or a literal one), here are some great verses to help you live through it:

1. Suddenly, a furious storm came up on the lake so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”—Matthew 8:24-27 (NIV)

This verse is a classic when it involves the theme of storms. As you can see, fear overtook the disciples’ faith because of the great storm. Instead of believing it would soon pass, Jesus had to demonstrate his great power over the storm.

While it’s easy to judge the disciples, the truth is—it’s almost effortless to fall into the trappings of fear. So, when that happens, we must also do what they did and turn to Jesus for help.

2. “God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding. He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’ and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’ So that everyone He has made may know His work, He stops all people from their labor.”—Job 37:5-7 (NIV)

Job, the central figure of the book of Job, is a good, prosperous family man. God allows horrendous disasters to take away the things he treasures as a test of faith. Despite Job unable to understand why he remains devout.

Job is the quintessential believer. As humans, we cannot understand God at all times. His reason is not similar to ours. So, when bad things happen, He has his reasons behind them. Whatever the case, we must continue to leave our trust in Him because His power is more significant than any suffering.

3. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”—Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)

Fear is not as strong as God. When we believe that our Lord is with us, He lends us the strength needed to live through it. It’s amazing how He can easily sway these fears immediately!

Storms are terrifying, but they are temporary. When fear clouds our minds and judgment, God expects us to relay these emotions to Him. When we ask God to erase our fears, we become more receptive to His grace and strength.

I pray that whatever storm you are facing now will eventually fade. Keep the faith!
